UK 10K Olympic Trials BONUS Two Throwing Events
Back to the Olympic Trials for me, Finally!
So Many ways to celebrate sport and striving for improvement.
And competition WITH others.
And testing of our preparation to perform.
Great Britain held it's Olympic Trials for the 10,000 meter run Saturday, May 18 as the highlight of an afternoon and evening of 10K races.
This was a wonderful event, even though the technique was only left, right, left, right, left, right for about half an hour.
And its basically just a test of who can stand the most pain.
Yes there are even two throwing events in this clip!

Al's right side gets into the throw better than most spinners today. Truly an elegant move that many tried to imitate but could never exactly copy. It required too much patience, not a long suit for big strong putters who wanted to use their muscles over rhythm and timing

Stephanie T Spinach between my teeth?
I remember Brooks when he was at St. Albans. He took an interest in everyone on the team - both the stars and the average athletes. A great man.
Awesome Mac! Those stop frames of Wolfgang are crazy, so good to see what is supposed to happen!
I was recently watching the video with Gideon and Al Orter training for the discus. Great. to see that he still passionate about throwing the discus. Can’t wait more!
Awesome. Thanks for this.
My pleasure! Its just the first layer of the onion. And it is combined with the coach's eye and the thrower's intuition for the final result.
Multi Mac legend!
It so much fun!
Great video analysis. Really glad to have discovered Mac Wilkins channel today. I remember seeing Mac portrayed in a Prefontaine movie and of course covered many times in Track & Field News. I used to get that magazine when I was in high school.
wish I knew then what I know now Mac,... Al explodes thru the middle better than anyone we have seen in these last 40 years!! thanks for Posting!
Rob, And the key was that it was such a smooth application of force due to his rhythm, positions, and savoir faire. He wouldn't break that rhythm to "hit it" even when the power out of the back was lacking. He would rather look like he was "Not Trying" than break rhythm and force the throw. Right Doc?
@@MacWilkins so like you often do, you just raised the bar Mac. So you are saying, there is no HIT IT at all, ever! , there is only smooth transfer of Rhythm, speed, and power. Thats interesting, I'll think about that for awhile...in a good baseball or golf swing there is no HIT IT either, just smooth transfer and club acceleration thru the zone ....HMMMM ? thanks Coach!!
Excellent questions and very useful to think about. I honestly believe that he can go much further with some improvement at the end of the throw. I could not imagine how powerful he must become to capture all that energy for release. He will push our understanding of how far the discuss can fly.
Hope so!
Mac, check out the left foot turn of Daniel Stahl and even Payton Otterdahl in the shot
I couldn't find consistent left foot action from either, but I think you might be implying that they do also stop the left foot rotation and come off the outside of the foot at the back. This may allow for a more forceful use of the left pulling on the right leg creating a greater right leg velocity. But I think it also shows that what you do in the back you must repeat at the front which in this case is the left is under rotated and is slightly blocking out at the front.. Whether this is good or bad is determined mostly by the tape measure. But also by the block which for both Daniel and Mykolas, the right foot lands with the right heel pointing to the throw. To me, this means the block wasn't strong enough. And it can force a right foot touch down in the reverse in a weak position, heel up with the mechanics and momentum forcing it down toward the rim.
How can I join these zoom calls?
This was part of the east coast learn by watching webinar Coach Mac had on April 15th on CoachTube. Not sure when the next one will be.
Frankie, I remember your name. Get on our mailing list. Send me your email via FB DM or whatever. I will do another one soon. Won't wait for Mykolas to throw 74m either.
@@MacWilkins appreciate it coach. I sent you message on Facebook. Would love to contribute to the conversation.
Excellent dialogue with Mo and you. Brings back many good memories in the ring. Also things i did well and where i needed to work more on. Wishing Mykolas much success in Paris and many more WR and yes minimal injuries! Sounds like they are covering all the basis of a long and successful career! ;o)
Yes Borys, If only we knew then what we know now! Minimum 2m more on every throw, Minimum! But, that's the way life is!
@@MacWilkins Exactly. Be well Mac!
great job on these 2 videos Mac.....so much to learn in these few minutes that can really make a huge difference in a thrower. THANKS !!
Right Rob, You have to look at it over and over and over. Eventually you will see or hear the real meaning. Using the Technique Machine can be very helpful.
Fellow throws coach here. This is the best analysis of Alekna on the internet right now. THANK YOU!!
Mo should Know!
@@MacWilkins Mac, you're the GOAT of USA discus!!
Great analysis. Everything I know about throwing came from these 2 coaches, Mac and Mo. Great job guys. - Rob Suelflohn
Thanks Rob!
Excellent guys and reinforces what some of us thought and that is he doesn't waste time overthinking the throw and focuses on maintaining ground contact as quickly as he can. The emphasis on the hips doing the rotation and not the feet is great advice.
The really good coaches know when the best advice is NO advice. Don't et in the way of their athletes!

Do you plan to post the rest of the conversation? This portion is very helpful.
This was part of Monday's 2nd CoachTube webinar. The missing part is the analysis of Alekna's throw with Alekna's college coach, surely that will be posted eventually.
Prt 1 of the west coast session with Coach Mo is up. Part 2 will follow soon
Good job coach...keep coaching & competing, we love you & all you bring to the "table"...Goooo Gators !!!
Wow Mac, thank you so much for this series of conversations they are so inspiring. I was SO happy to know Frank is 1) still alive and 2) looking outrageous at over 90!! and to listen to him about his life passions and challenges is so empowering, what a wonderful human! I've just had my 2nd hip replacement and I am off into the sunny day here for a walk with Frank in mind dealing with Polio at 21! PS: at 73 you look ridiculous too so I'm feeling indestructible at 60 and motivated more than ever to keep on training and throw that 1 kg discus far!
Hey Mac, thanks for doing this interview. I hope steph gets to keep this forever -the old man-
Magic - thanks both!
So cool to hear Kate's history..... never got to dig this deep when we did clinics/camps together. Thanks large, Mac
Interesting Duncan, thanks for sharing. I always find it fascinating on how people find the javelin to become a thrower.
Excellent work Mac 👌👊
Excellent series. Thank you Mac for a career of inspiring throwers to love training and the personal satisfaction of chasing PR's.
Did you coach Ryan with discus Mac ?
Great video!
Great stuff Mac & Duncan! There are a few young athletes that still have great work ethics! I’m coaching one, and we’re heading to State in both disc and Javelin, next week! Both of you have been positive influences in my coaching, and I try to keep you guys in the training and teach them about the roots of the throwing events. 2023 Oregon 6-A state
That is awesome! Hope state went well

Sounds interesting. Can you share more?
Huge Respect for You Sir ❤
Thanks Mac for these technique evaluations they really help me have a primary movement focus for parts of the throw I can be better at (like low orbit!)
Glad to help
I am going to compete in the World and British Championships this year. Mac's coaching is a God send to me. I can't wait to try out these techniques. In fact I have been practising whilst working as a security officer this evening. No other coach has ever taught me this before. It feels right immediately! Thank you Mac. Best wishes from the UK.
Wow. You just solved a problem for me that I’ve been searching everywhere for, in 26 seconds. You’re one of the best for a reason I guess 😂
Foul!
nice observation
We got Sherlock Holmes here
Joe Kovacs has very fast rotation
Mac did you technique get inspired by jay sylvester
Yes, LJ was presented as the technical model for the throw. I don't feel I made a very authentic replica of his technique.
Why am I just finding this video now?
Sweet video, never get tired of seeing Mac and Wolfgang. Also best music on a discus video hands down!
Mac has hands down the best blocking action of all time. The hair helps accentuate it even more!
Mac what kind of netting is that the guy Is throwing into??
amazing power and athleticism!! Congrats to Ryan and thanks for sharing, Mac.
Thanks for this Mac
Exceptional delivery of the shot in the finish....
before he threw this big throw with the 16lb in high school did he ever have prior experience working out with the 16lb? Or was all his training done with 12lb at this time and he just thought hey ill see what i can do with 16lb?
I ask because in this meet in Boise he also threw a big mark with the 16lb 19.48m.
I like this Mac. I have had some spine issues this could help
thanks mac wilkins
Good tip. I am sorry... but does 9 o'clock mean? What is at nine o'clock?
+David Lingner David, Sorry for the confusion. Everyone has a different point for identifying directions in the circle. Hammer throwers often use degrees 0 to 360. For me, 12 o'clock is straight out the back of the circle. 9 o'clock is 90 degrees to the left or when your left arm, face, knee and foot are 90 degrees from the direction of the throw (6 o'clock) and 90 degrees from straight out the back of the circle (12 o'clock) and so on. The key is to be on balance at 9 o'clock, (left arm pit over the toes of the left foot) right foot just off the ground and starting to drop the COG and left knee as you pass over 9 o'clock turning to the target at 6 o'clock. This is the single leg support phase. Starting on the inside of the ball of the left foot makes balance and the dropping action easier and more bio-mechanically achievable.
